Canadian lawmakers honored Parliament sergeant-at-arms Kevin Vickers with a lengthy standing ovation Thursday morning, one day after a gunman killed a soldier at Ottawa’s war memorial and then tore through the Parliament building.

Law enforcement officials have not officially confirmed that it was Vickers, 58, who took down shooting suspect Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, but multiple government officials took to Twitter to say in no uncertain terms that members of Parliament owe their lives to the 29-year Royal Canadian Mounted Police veteran.

The white-haired Vickers, emotion on his face, stood and acknowledged the ovation inside the House of Commons, which lasted well over two minutes.
