Taiji whale museum drops out from JAZA
The decision by the Taiji Whale Museum in the town of Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture, comes after JAZA decided in July to expel aquariums that acquire dolphins caught through a method known as drive hunting.
In April, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, or WAZA, suspended the membership of the Japanese association over the hunting method that it said violates its code of ethics.
Japan's membership was restored after the Japanese association informed its members of the ban on acquiring dolphins through the method.
The museum informed JAZA that it plans to purchase dolphins caught through the method this year.
The museum is home to some 50 dolphins and small-sized whales.
JAZA accepted the museum's notice of withdrawal.
The association says the Taiji museum is the first to leave JAZA since members were banned from obtaining dolphins captured by drive hunting.
Museum official Tetsuo Kirihata told NHK that the decision was reached after numerous discussions.
He says drive hunting is legal, as hunters are given permits by the governor of Wakayama. He expressed readiness to acquire dolphins caught by the method.
The Taiji Whale Museum has rejected the ethical policies of the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums. They will continue to support the drive slaughter and enslavement of dolphins.
The responsibility for the killing of thousands of dolphins lies ultimately with each and ever person who purchases a ticket to a marine aquarium. When you place your ass on a seat in one of these facilities to watch an Orca, a Dolphin or any species of Cetacean perform circus tricks for your amusement, you are guilty of contributing to the death of dolphins. Their blood is on YOUR hands, their deaths are on YOUR conscience. That ticket you bought was a death sentence for a dolphin.
Remember that the next time you think of going to Sea World or any of the other dolphin prisons anywhere in the world.
