The
Russian president’s battalions of the awesome S-400 anti-aircraft
missiles signal not only a shift in the balance of power in the region
but are a threat to coalition aircraft, as only the most sophisticated
US stealth aircraft can evade the S-400’s cutting edge radar technology.
The
anti-aircraft system can detect both ballistic missiles and aircraft
from 250 miles away – and shoot then from the sky with a near 100% kill
rate.
Each S-400 battalion has up to 72 missiles, eight launchers, a control centre, two radars and a mast.
With a missile speed of
11,000mph an hour, a response time of less than 10 seconds and the
class-leading 250 mile range , the S-400 is a potential threat to allied
aircraft flying over Syria, Iraq, Turkey and Cyprus.
Only America's B-2 Stealth bomber and F-22 fighter can fly close to the system without being detected.
The
S-400, which can fire three types of missiles, is capable of targeting
up to 36 airplanes and has the ability to not only shoot down planes,
but also ballistic missiles, at an altitude of up to 30km.
Russian
Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said: “According to the decision of the
Supreme Commander-in-Chief, an S-400 AA missile system will be projected
to the Hmeymim airbase to ensure air defence in all directions.”
