PHOTOS: ISIS Preaches Quran to Christians in Raqqa After Collecting Non-Muslim Tax
In a new photo report purportedly released
by the Islamic State, an Islamist preacher is seen preaching the Quran
to Christians in Syria after collecting jizya taxes from them for not
being Muslims. According to Wikipedia,
the jizya tax: "is a religiously required per capita yearly tax
historically levied by Islamic states on certain non-Muslim subjects
(dhimmis) permanently residing in Muslim lands under Islamic law." It is
described in the Quranic verse 9:29, which reads:
"Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do
not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful
and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the
Scripture - [fight] until they give the jizyah willingly while they are
humbled." The jizya tax has not been imposed on non-Muslims in Muslim
countries since the fall of the Ottoman Empire in 1918, but ISIS has
revived it.
