Sharia creeps into Ottawa City Hall: Oppress yourself, sister!

The City of Ottawa recently held a public event at City Hall celebrating the hijab
– an Islamist head-covering many Muslim women consider oppressive. An
organization calling itself, “City for All Women Initiative” asked
non-Muslim women in the nation’s capital to offer support for the hijab
by wearing one regardless of their faith, to show solidarity.
Unlike so many of the countries where the hijab is dominant, this is a
free country so if you want to wear one, wear one. Why ask for approval
from the municipal government?
Only Islam demands this. It’s sharia creep. Tolerance is never
enough. Affirmation and celebration is demanded from our government and
far too often, it’s given.
The claim the hijab is fundamental to the religion has been challenged and disproven many times including most recently in a Sun
column by Tarek Fatah who explains what happened when Iran became the
Iranian Islamic Republic. Maybe life under the Shah wasn’t paradise but
this clothing decree was the first taste of hell for Persians once
Islamists were calling the shots in Tehran.
What do feminists in the western world have to say about this? The silence is deafening.
If female solidarity means embracing symbols of female oppression,
why stop at the hijab? Why not Burka or Niqab Day? Maybe a day to
honour the chastity belt? National Foot-Binding Day anyone? Let’s go all
out and champion female genital mutilation. Progressives will call me
“culturally insensitive” for using that terminology. They prefer
“F.G.B.” – female genital beautification.
As we “celebrate” the hijab, think about how some Canadian cities are even making it part of the police uniform. In a generation or two, perhaps cities in the west will be holding rallies in support of "female genital beautification".
