“Not all 750 million Muslim
women are all the same. Not all of "them" who move to countries where
the hijab is not mandatory choose to wear them. Yes a lot of them do. Some of
them have to choose between unveiling and their family and community's love and
respect. Some of them want to identify publicly as Muslim because thanks to
media and government stereotyping they feel like they're under attack and need
to stand up for themselves and their religion. Every situation is different.
Every woman is different. We are not carbon copies of each other. Like Western
woman we are individuals too. And have to make the very difficult choices
regarding clothing and veiling that come from belonging to any strongly
patriarchal culture (there are many). Choices that you who are not from
cultures like this never have to make. Instead of judging those who have less
freedom of choice than you do be grateful and try to ask how you can help if
someone asks for help.”
