Ready.gov Launches Social Media Preparedness Initiative Posted: 16 Jul 2009 10:24 PM PDT The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Ready Campaign, in partnership with The Advertising Council, is introducing a series of new social media tools today to further engage Americans in taking steps to prepare for emergencies. The initiative is an extension of Resolve to be Ready in 2009, a nationwide effort designed to encourage individuals, families, businesses and communities to take action and prepare for emergencies in 2009. The social media tools will engage Americans in taking the three simple steps communicated in the Ready Campaign: (1) Get an emergency supply kit; (2) Make a family emergency plan; and (3) Be informed about the types of emergencies that can happen in your area and their appropriate responses. At the center of the initiative is a new Web page, “Be Prepared,” which features an interactive widget that provides users with updates on emergency situations, local emergency contact information, an instructional video, emergency kit checklists and guidelines on how to better prepare for an emergency. Users can also access a clickable map to find contact information for state and local government agencies, where they can learn more about specific emergency information in their communities. Additionally, the widget helps users stay up-to-date on the latest Ready activities through Twitter news feeds (by following the user name “ReadydotGov”). The widget can be posted to social networking profiles, blogs, wikis and personal homepages. The program also includes a tool with which visitors can create their own comprehensive Family Emergency Plan and share important information with their family and friends. Furthermore, visitors are encouraged to share their story on preparedness by submitting a video to the Ready Campaign Video Blog. The new Web page can be accessed by clicking on an online banner on the homepage of www.ready.gov, the Ready Campaign Web site. Former Terror Officials Point To al Qaeda Connected Group In Blast Posted: 16 Jul 2009 10:23 PM PDT Two former senior U.S. officials who dealt directly with issues of terror in Indonesia say the bombings in Jakarta today bear the trademarks of the al Qaeda-connected Group Jemayah Islamiya, whose top bomb-maker, Noordin Top, has been at large and feared preparing a new attack. Authorities are looking for Noordin Mohammed Top in connection with two explosions in Jakarta, Indonesia. Former White House counter-terrorism chief Richard Clarke, now an ABC News consultant, said the virtually simultaneous attacks and current intelligence point to the involvement of Top, who he called one “He is one of the most wanted men in Asia.” Read More This story comes to us via Homeland Security - National Terror Alert. Toledo – Envelope Explodes At Downtown Police Department Posted: 16 Jul 2009 09:17 PM PDT A package delivered to the Toledo Police Department downtown early Thursday afternoon exploded on the fourth floor. Two officers were treated at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center and decontaminated. Initially the officers that opened the package believed there was a white powdery substance inside. It was hissing before it exploded shortly after 1 p.m. At least two officers, a lieutenant and a detective, were affected when the package was opened. They were both transported to St. Vincent’s emergency room as a precaution. Both officers were decontaminated and treated by physicians, at St. V’s. “When the officer opened the box there was a hissing noise that would suggest some type of gas escape when he opened the box,” said Thomas Jaksetic, Toledo Fire Battalion Chief and Homeland Security spokesman. FOX Toledo’s Michelle Zepeda was inside the downtown police Safety Building while it was being cordoned off. A source within the police department told Zepeda the package possibly had narcotics inside it. The entire fourth floor was closed off for about three hours and the elevators were shut down as a precaution. St. Vincent’s ER was also locked down for about three hours as well. Jakarta – Bomb Blasts Hit Ritz-Carlton and Marriott Hotels Posted: 16 Jul 2009 09:07 PM PDT A pair of powerful bombs exploded at two luxury hotels in an upscale Jakarta business district Friday, killing 9 and wounding at least 50, officials said. The blasts at the neighboring Ritz-Carlton and Marriott hotels blew out windows and scattered debris and glass across the street. An Indonesian security minister said nine people were killed. South Jakarta police Col. Firman Bundi earlier said that four of the dead were foreigners. At the Metropolitan Medical Center, a list was posted with the names of people wounded. An official at the registration office said 11 were foreigners. She declined to give her name because she was not authorized to speak to the media. Alex Asmasubrata, who was jogging by the hotels, said he first heard a loud explosion at the Marriott. Five minutes later, a bomb followed at the Ritz.
