Hillary Clinton Says Bin Laden, Zawahiri in Pakistan Posted: 20 Jul 2009 10:20 PM PDT U.S. officials “firmly believe” that al-Qaida leaders who planned and carried out the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, are hiding in Pakistan near its border with Afghanistan, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday. At a news conference concluding three days of meetings, Clinton said Washington has told the Pakistani government what it believes about the location of al-Qaida leaders on its soil. “With respect to the location of those who were part of the planning and execution of the attack of 9/11 against our country, we firmly believe that a significant number of them are in the border area of Pakistan,” she said when asked about the U.S. view. “We are actively looking for additional information that would lead us to them,” she added. UK Drops Terror Alert Level To Lowest Level In 2 Years Posted: 20 Jul 2009 10:11 PM PDT Britain’s government reduced its terror alert level Monday to its lowest level since the July 7, 2005 bombings of the London transport system but warned that the threat remains serious. The government did not explain its decision to downgrade the threat from “severe,” which Britain’s domestic spy agency MI5 describes on its Web site as a “high likelihood” of future terror attacks” to “substantial,” which means that such an attack remains a “strong possibility.” Terror experts were divided on the thinking that lay behind the change. Bob Ayers, a London-based former U.S. intelligence officer, said officials may have reduced the threat level in an effort to show that the war in Afghanistan — where British soldiers are engaged in an increasingly bloody fight with Taliban rebels — is helping keep the country safe from extremists. But he said the move sat uneasily with dire warnings voiced last year that British security services were tracking 2,000 people and dozens of suspected terrorist plots. “Where did they go? Berkeley Cops Seize Bomb Materials From Home Posted: 20 Jul 2009 10:05 PM PDT A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing explosive materials at a home in the Berkeley hills, police said today. Emoru Oboke Obbanya, 27 was arrested at 976 Grizzly Peak Blvd. links.sfgate.com/ZHRK by officers investigating a 911 hang-up call at about 12:30 p.m. Saturday, authorities said. Obbanya refused to open the door at first, then came outside and immediately closed the door, police Lt. Andrew Greenwood said. He appeared nervous, cursed the officers and refused to provide evidence that he lived there, police said. Officers decided to search the home to make sure no one inside needed help, Greenwood said. They obtained a search warrant and found bomb-making chemicals and other items used to make explosives, police said. Police said they didn’t know what Obbanya planned to do with the material. ‘Rumor Mongers’ of Radioactive Leak Caught in China Posted: 20 Jul 2009 12:22 PM PDT Police have caught five people who incited public panic by making up rumors of radioactive leak last month at a foods sterilization plant in Qi County of Kaifeng, in Central China’s Henan Province, Dahe.cn reported Monday. They five had spread false information on the internet about an alleged radioactive leak at the Limin Irradiation Factory in Qi County, increasing concern about radiation poisoning among local residents and badly affecting social stability. The government had kept silent for a month after the accident, causing local residents to panic because they couldn’t get any information on the leak and creating an opportunity for the rumors to spread. The rumors had prompted some residents to move out of their houses in fear of the radiation, until local officials confirmed that no radioactive leak had occurred. They explained that on June 7, the radiation source in the plant was accidentally blocked and cannot be replaced to its storage place. However, they reassured that no radiation pollution will occur and the problem is expected to be resolved by the end of August. Residents have since moved back to their homes.
