This week, Muslims around the world were observing the first week of Ramadan.
International papers covered events and the controversy surrounding the building of a mosque at Ground Zero continued to boil.

A few interesting stories surfaced about Ramadan. In Dearborn Michigan, we heard of a public high school that is changing its football practice schedule from regular hours to 11 p.m. until 4 a.m. The article was written in a praising tone- as the school's flexibility was highlighted positively. The article however does not cover the inconvenience that the other students must suffer from losing their nights of sleep.

CNN.com this week has an entire section of their front page called "Muslim in 2010." Articles praise different individuals who are making a difference, while asking Muslims to speak out about what it means to be under constant discrimination. No where in this section does it refer to radical Islam, or about terrorism or human rights abuses ordered by Shariah. How can CNN focus so much on being a Muslim in 2010 without acknowledging that many of the articles on the other part of the website only exist because of radical Muslims (note: see any stories about suicide bombings or stonings).

In this week's newsletter take a moment to read about what makes a mosque moderate or radical. You can even go and ask your own local mosque where they stand on critical issues. Learn about the American government's relationship with the new Ground Zero mosque and then take action. Find a rally or event in your neighborhood and make your voice heard this 9/11. Stay tuned to future newsletters for more information on how you can raise awareness and help make a difference.

Is Your Local Mosque 'Moderate' or 'Radical'?

by Tawfik Hamid

Ask the Imams of Mosques, the Muslim leaders, and the Islamic organizations in the US and worldwide to sign this declaration (See below)

After the problem of Ground Zero Mosque has escalated it becomes an urgent necessity to distinguish 'Moderate' from 'Radical' Islam. Without making such a distinction the US and the rest of the world will remain divided regarding this issue. Debates about the issue can be endless unless we define the words 'radical' and 'moderate'.

Mosque leaders, Islamic scholars, and organizations who want to be considered Moderates MUST clearly and unambiguously declare the following declaration in their media outlets and on their websites. more

Obama's Ramadan Pandering

by Robert Spencer

z
Ramadan didn’t fall around Christmas time this year, but Barack Obama came bearing gifts anyway. At an Iftar dinner Friday night at the White House (the third night of Ramadan), Obama endorsed the Islamic supremacist mega-mosque at Ground Zero.

In doing so, he was in effect saying that Muslims could build a triumphal mosque marking Islam’s superiority and victory—which is how the Ground Zero mosque will be viewed in the Islamic world—and can lie about their funding (as Ground Zero mosque Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf has done), and lie about their commitment to interreligious dialogue and harmony (as Rauf has also done), and refuse to denounce jihad terrorists (as Rauf has refused to denounce Hamas), and all that is just fine with the President of the United States.

For Obama, it’s all about religious freedom. Apparently now the principle of religious freedom now gives religious groups an absolute right to build anything anywhere. Expect Shinto revivalists to build a shrine to the kamikazes at Pearl Harbor any day now, and self-proclaimed Christian Ku Klux Klansmen to build a chapel honoring the Confederate dead at the site of the murder of Martin Luther King. It’s religious freedom! It’s the American way! more
