The Legal Project, an activity of the Middle East
Forum, is pleased to announce that Director Sam Nunberg will be participating
in the following panel:
U.N. Human Rights Council Resolution 16/18: Respect
for Religions or Anti-Freedom of Expression?
Co-hosted by Center
for Democracy and Human Rights in Saudi Arabia (CDHR), and American Islamic
Forum for Democracy (AIFD)
Monday, April 30, 2012
10:00AM – 12:00PM
Director Nunberg will discuss The
Istanbul Process and its long term implications on both US foreign and
domestic policy.
This past December, the State Department hosted The Istanbul
Process for Combating Intolerance and Discrimination Based on Religion or
Belief. OIC has described the conference
as a "coordination meeting" on implementing "defamation of
religions." The European Union has offered to host the next meeting which the OIC hailed as "the
beginning of the shift from their previous reserve over
the years over the attempts by the OIC to counter 'defamation of
religions.'" However, this newfound diplomatic initiative by
Western governments is antithetical to both Article 19 of The
Universal Declaration of Human Rights which guarantees "the right to
freedom of opinion and expression" including to "to hold opinions
without interference" as well as the First Amendment of the United States
Constitution.
Sam Nunberg has previously served as a Delegate to
the United Nations in New York City where he met with UN Missions in 2009 and
2010 to advocate against the defamation of religion resolutions.
