The Mosque as Mother
by NANCY HARTEVELT KOBRIN, PHD May 30, 2012Our current Salman Rushdie is the young courageous Iranian rapper Shahin Nafaji, now in hiding in Germany who has received a death threat because he wrote lyrics to his song Naqi. However, I contend it is the album cover, which broke the proverbial camel's back of the Mahdists. The cover depicts the dome of the mosque of the 8th Shia Imam as a female breast with a rainbow flag "a la sexual diversity" as a thin impotent phallic minaret arising out of the nimple! A picture speaks a thousand words.
In an interview by the BBC Shahin spoke about sex and Shia Islam -- "how transparent Islam is with regard to sexuality."
What exactly did he mean by "transparent"? I take him to mean that a perverse sexuality lurks below the surface of Mahdist culture, which hates the female. The dome of the mosque is an unconscious representation of the female breast of the nursing mother. This is the essence of a shame honor culture signifying that there is maternal deprivation and paranoia. They go hand in hand. The little girls and women are abused. With shame, comes blaming the other but hardly ever the mother because the mother is the object to be protected by the little humiliated, shamed boy who witnesses his mother being abused. The little boy feels his mother to be an extension of himself. To see her hit, is for him to feel her pain. He must protect her at all costs. Picture a frightened little boy clinging hysterically to his mother's skirt.
This same little boy harbors an erotized rage that in many instances exceeds murder itself. It is not just enough to murder; it must in order to redeem honor through blood violence. The hatred and violence is an erotized hatred - the intense hatred of the female that is not satiated by merely murdering.
The Mahdist regime is perpetually stuck in an infantile mode of shame, regressed to defending their weak mothers who live their lives through them and they hate it. It is a vicious cycle for which we pay the price as the rage is projected outwards in the vessel of political violence and nuclear war. Remember too, that it was Shia's Hezbollah who initiated Islamic suicide truck bombing on a grand scale in southern Lebanon in the early 1980s. It was readily adopted by Arab Muslim cultures because they too are shame/honor. The mosque is their mother too. Indeed this transparency of symbol and obsession for the mother can be sensed in the word "Umma" meaning the Muslim community, which comes from the same root in Arabic for ummi or "mommy".
The Mosque at Najaf, Iraq
Consider another transparent image concerning a mosque and a now famous military anecdote told about Col. Chris Hughes who was en route to the Mosque of Najaf after the invasion of Iraq with his battalion of the 101st Screaming Eagles. As his troops approached the mosque, a swarm of enraged Muslim men appeared as if they were circling the skirts of their mothers at the foot of the mosque. Col. Hughes told his men to give a knee, point their weapons down and smile. He spoke in pantomime communicating that he understood their terror. He read unconsciously the paranoid threat that these Muslim men felt that the mosque, their mother, was under attack when in fact he had come to honor the imam.
The Al-Aksa Mosque, Jerusalem
This brings us to the hatred of Israel and the Mother of All Lies - that Al Aksa Mosque is under threat. Nadav Shragai has just published a most scholarly book on The "Al-Aksa is in Danger" Libel": A History of a Lie, Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, 2012. It should be required reading by all. While it is not within the scope of his project to deal with the issue of sexuality tied to the mosque, nevertheless the pernicious Al Aksa Mosque libel builds on, taps into and shows how the mosque libel has weaponized the preexisting erotized hatred. Israel is the " bad mother". Al-Aksa is the "good mother" as paranoid thinking goes. The Al-Aksa Mosque Libel and its lie that the Jews seek to destroy the mosque transparently reveals the debilitating non-progressive thinking of Palestinian leadership.
By way of conclusion I refer back to my last week's piece -- "Time Magazine and Terrorism - What's Nursing Got to do with it?"
What Shahin Najafi's album cover of the mosque as breast is to the Iranians, the Time Magazine cover is to Western culture. Yet the latter cover did not precipitate a death threat. In stark contrast the Al-Aksa Mosque Libel has lead to a continuing escalation of violence. Certainly the absurdity of such a perversion does not warrant innocent people being murdered. May the courageous Shahin Najafi remain safe. But above all know that the Al-Aksa Mosque is NOT in danger. Tragically because the Palestinians have normalized bad behavior as if it were the truth, they feel and live the full force of paranoia. Ironically Al-Aksa Mosque is alive and well, residing on the Temple Mount protected by the Jews. Only when they stop living the lie, will peace be achievable.
