Egypt warns giving women some rights could destroy society
UNITED NATIONS
(Reuters) - Egypt's ruling Muslim Brotherhood warns that a U.N.
declaration on women's rights could destroy society by allowing a woman
to travel, work and use contraception without her husband's approval and
letting her control family spending.
The Islamist party
of President Mohamed Mursi outlined 10 reasons why Muslim countries
should "reject and condemn" the declaration. The Brotherhood, which was
elected to power in June, posted the statement on its website,
http://www.ikhwanweb.com/
The Muslim Brotherhood said the declaration would give "wives
full rights to file legal complaints against husbands accusing them of
rape or sexual harassment, obliging competent authorities to deal
husbands punishments similar to those prescribed for raping or sexually
harassing a stranger, give girls sexual freedom, legalize abortion,
provide teenagers with contraceptives, give equality to women in
marriage and require men and women to share duties such as child care
and chores, equal rights to homosexuals, and provide protection and
respect for prostitutes" and "equal rights to adulterous wives and illegitimate sons resulting from adulterous relationships."
The
Muslim Brotherhood should, indeed, be worried, not because equal rights
for women would not destroy society, it will destroy what they care
more for, namely Islam.
The United States and all democratic
societies have achieved prosperity by granting women equal rights. It
was the Second World War that led to the economic transformation of
women. While men from the USA, Canada and Britain marched to war by the
millions, women left their homes by the millions, heading to the
factories to become machinists, welders, electricians, carpenters,
millwrights, plumbers, truck drivers etc. They labored on machines,
toiled with wrenches and hammers, saws and screw drivers to manufacture
planes and tanks, ships and guns. Without women the victory of democracy
over Nazism and the Japanese Imperialism would have been imperiled.
Today women occupy high positions in all professions.
It is illegal for a husband to have sex
with his wife against her will. Spousal rape is rape. "No” means “No" is
a legal right for women.
Article 36 of the new draft of Egypt’s
post-revolution Constitution, concerning women’s right and freedoms,
contains an additive, saying “men and women are equal, so long as this equality does not violate Islamic laws.”
Lawyer Sobhi Saleh, Muslim Brotherhood
figure and member of the Constituent Assembly in charge of drafting
Egypt’s post-revolution Constitution stated: “Whoever objects to
this bit will be objecting to the Islamic faith and wreaking havoc
unnecessarily. Those who protest have to know that there is no absolute
equality between men and women in Islam and inheritance is an example”.
In Islam, married women are the property
of her husband. He can and is, indeed, obligated to use violence to
control his wife. Wife beating is sanctioned by God and the Sunnah of
Prophet Muhammad (Quran 4:34):
Men (Muslims) are in charge of women
(Muslimah), therefore Allah has made the Muslim (men) to excel the
Muslim (women), and because Muslim (men) spend of their property, so
good women (Muslimah) are the obedient, guarding in secret that which
Allah has guarded. As for those women (Muslimah/wives) from whom you
fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and beat
them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them…
Pickthall: “and scourge them”
Yusuf Ali: “(And last) beat them (lightly)”
Al-Hilali/Khan: “(and last) beat them (lightly, if it is useful)”
Shakir: “and beat them”
Sher Ali: “and chastise them”
Khalifa: “then you may (as a last alternative) beat them”
Arberry: “and beat them”
Rodwell: “and scourge them”
Sale: “and chastise them”
Daryabadi: "and beat them"
Asad: “then beat them”
Dawood: "and beat them”
There are four reasons for which men can
beat their wives: 1) “if she refuses to beautify herself for him,” 2)
if she refuses sex when he asks for it, 3) if she refuses to pray or
perform ritual ablutions, and 4) “if she goes out of the house without a
valid excuse”. Also, Muhammad’s example is normative for Muslims, since
he is an “excellent example of conduct” (Koran 33:21). According to
Sahih Muslim 2127, Once the Prophet went out at night after he thought
she was asleep, but she followed him surreptitiously. When Muhammad saw
her, recounts Aisha, “He struck me on the chest which caused me
pain, and then said: Did you think that Allah and His Apostle would deal
unjustly with you?”
Elsewhere, Aisha herself said: “I have not seen any woman suffering as much as the believing women.” (Sahih Bukhari 7.72.715)
Sharia Law mandates the oppression and subjugation of women.
Wife beating – “[A
husband] may hit her, but not in a way that injures her, meaning he may
not break bones, wound her, or cause blood to flow.” (Section m10.12)
Honor killing – “The
following are not subject to retaliation: a father or mother for killing
their offspring, or offspring’s offspring. (Section o1.2(4))
- Women over the age of puberty are not permitted to leave the
house without covering the body (except face and hands). (Fatwa
667, Part No. 17, Page 142-150)
- Women are not permitted to travel without a spouse or male relative. (Fatwa 12139, Part No. 11, Page 38)
- Women are not permitted to be alone with men who are not
relatives or spouses, and the punishment for such "indecency" is
whipping or stoning. (Fatwa 9693, Part No. 12, Page 381 & 382)
- Women are not permitted to speak softly to a man or otherwise
provoke his desire with letters, phone calls or glances, the
punishment of which is whipping or stoning. (Fatwa 9693, Part No. 12,
Page 381 & 382)
Nearly half of the Saudi and Egyptian women suffer beatings by their husbands or other male family members.
To give Muslim women equal rights would
mean the denying of the validity of verse 4:34, also of 4:34, and many
other teachings as not being from God, but were fabricated by Muhammad.
The imprisonment of Muslim women – their subjugation and oppression and
denial of their humanity and equality – is the divine foundation of
Islam.
The liberal world—the UN, the Western
societies and others—must fight for the rights of Muslim women to Life,
Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. To prevent the enslavement of
women, Sharia Law must be exposed, discredited and resisted. All
anti-woman teachings of the Quran and Hadith must be condemned and
rejected. The rights of women must be enforced and protected through
the Rule of Law and a Constitutional Amendment:
Universal Declaration of the Total Equality of Women.
The liberal world must immediately ratify this Amendment and take a
firm stand toward its ratification by all 57 Muslim nations. In this
Proclamation, each anti-woman teaching of the Quran and Sharia Law must
be condemned and made illegal. By doing so, and establishing these
rights—denied by Islam—as “Constitutional”, we are reinforcing our
rejection of Sharia Law and the Quran, making it impossible for Muslims
to undermine the democratic rights of women in the United States and
worldwide. This Amendment and rights of women must be taught to student
in schools in every country. Nations that refuse to implement such a
Constitutional Amendment for ensuring equal rights and dignity of women
should be thrown out of the international community.
Keeping women subjugated and imprisoned
is the primary cause for the worldwide resurgence of Islamic radicalism
and violence. Therefore, those of us, involved in the battle against
Islam, must champion a worldwide movement for the total and complete
equality between men and women. We are not in conflict with Muslims, but
with Islamic teachings that inspire Muslim men to subjugate and
denigrate women of their own faith and beyond. If the Muslim women are
able to attain their liberty and dignity, Islamic radicalism will die;
so will Islam, like Nazism and Communism.
