We Have Engaged the Borg

The Borg are the arch nemesis of the United Federation of Planets in the renowned Sci-Fi sitcom Star Trek. Gene Roddenberry's creation is the epitome of soulless evil in so many ways. The Borg have an unremitting quest to assimilate those of all races and species into a collective, and this assimilation often involves violence. Does that sound familiar?

Unfortunately for humanity the evil of the Borg is not only relevant to the context of science fiction; the real-life Borg are the adherents of extremist Islam. Extremist Imams capture the minds of people, erase their identities and convert them to Islam. Those radicalised then become radical preachers themselves and hence the cycle is endless. This is not too dissimilar from the subjugation inflicted by the Borg. They also capture people and strip away their existing identities before forcing them to form part of a malign collective that repeats the forced assimilation of others.

The directives of Islamists and the Borg mirror each other in many ways. Perhaps the most fundamental trait they share is their flagrant enmity for the virtue of tolerance. Islamists want a 7th-century caliphate and the Borg want to assimilate all into becoming cybernetic organisms. Both pathological goals are closed to debate and resistance is often met with pugnacity and bloodshed.
The Borg do not care who they assimilate, whether a Klingon or a Human it simply doesn't matter. Likewise Islamists prey on people from differing ethnicities. The way in which their onslaught transcends race is typified by the conversions of the likes of Richard Dart (top, right), for instance. Like the victims of the Borg, the victims of Islam outreach racial and cultural barriers in their composition.

In the Star Trek episode "The Best of Both Worlds" Captain Picard is assimilated into the Borg collective. His name is changed to Locutus of Borg; this is akin to the way Richard Dart adopted the name Salahuddin al-Britani.

On the brighter side it is possible to escape such evil clutches. Captain Picard was rescued by his shipmates and spared a hollowed-out and soulless existence. Similarly Ayaan Hirsi Ali was saved by the Dutch who granted her political asylum in 1992. This demonstration of kindness enabled her to escape a planned forced marriage and go on to become a prominent critic of Islam. Having been taught stringent Saudi Arabian teachings she absconded and continues to spread awareness of the pervasive violations of human rights that occur under Islamic jurisdiction.
But for every Picard or Hirsi Ali who finds salvation there are countless who remain brainwashed and prepared to exact evil.

Our fight against Islamic extremism is perhaps tougher than the fight of the United Federation of Planets against the Borg. Whereas the Federation was wholly aware of the Borg threat and rallied together to fight it, our liberal elites appease Islam. And as militant Islam often operates more stealthily than the Borg our enemy is harder to vanquish.

The Federation would never allow the Borg to fund assimilation of humans on planet Earth but our government allows extremist Mosques to convert British citizens, on our soil, through Saudi funding. The Federation would never allow harmful members of the Borg to live in comfort on the USS Enterprise but Anjem Choudary and other extremists have been allowed by the British government to live safely on the dole.

The Federation would never brand their own people 'bigoted' for drawing attention to the threat of the Borg yet when we express our concerns over Islamic extremism we suffer all kinds of name-calling.
The Federation would never allow the Borg to stand on the streets of Earth with placards declaring "Resistance is Futile", but our government allows Muslims to stand on the streets with banners that say "Islam Will Rule the World".

The Federation would not appease the Borg by facilitating their legal system but our government sanctions sharia law courts that promote misogyny and discrimination.

The key difference between our government and the United Federation of Planets is that the latter is sane and the former is exceptionally sick.

The Borg were defeated because their opposition was unimpeded by treason from within. If there had been a fleet of inter-galactic useful idiots like Hope Not Hate or Unite Against Fascism flying through the Delta Quadrant telling people to ignore the obvious, then the Borg might have prevailed.
The thing I find most loveable about the 24th century is that there is no far Left, no Guardian and no BBC. The leaders of the civilized universe know full well who the enemy is and they throw all their weight behind defeating it. The pity is our government can't do the same.
