Tokyo Electric has continued to
conduct measurements around storage tanks which leaked some 300 tons of
contaminated water in August. The utility announced on Thursday that
140,000 becquerels per liter of beta-emitting radioactive substances were
collected in a water sample from a ditch which runs into the Pacific Ocean.
On Tuesday, the utility
measured 59,000 becquerels in water sampled at the same location, which was
more than 11 times greater than the 5,000 becquerel readings taken on Monday.
TEPCO officials admit that
rainwater may have carried radioactive materials from surrounding areas into
the ditch and directed the flow into the ocean.
Workers on-site began
sandbagging the ditch on the ocean side and pumping the water, but were
unable to fully block contaminated water from entering the ocean. The
utility plans to transfer the water which is accumulating in the ditch to a
storage tank.
