Dear Reader:
I thank readers who have donated in 2013 to the Middle East Forum, and I invite those who have not sent in a tax-deductible contribution to do so before year's end.
As an example of our work, the Forum's opinion-shapers recently helped solidify the bipartisan consensus against the Nov. 24 Geneva deal with Tehran.
Mainstream opinion breathlessly hailed the "Joint Plan of Action" with the mullahs (for example, the Washington Post called it "a historic deal"). But, working with many allies, Forum experts exposed the JPA as a foreign policy disaster that helps the Iranians go nuclear and makes war much more likely:
  • The agreement leaves Iran with the ability to continue irreversible progress towards achieving a nuclear weapon.
  • Iran's windfall from sanction relief comes to about $20 billion, or three times the P5+1's estimates.
  • The Saudis see themselves as deeply threatened.
  • The Iranians are desperate, fearing a population collapse, and are ready to take dangerous measures.
  • This action fits into a larger approach by Obama that seeks to turn Tehran from adversary to partner by acceding to key Iranian demands.
  • This deal confirms the Obama administration's inability to understand the region.
In a rapid turn-around, Democrats joined Republicans to unite against the Geneva deal. On Dec. 19, Sens. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and 26 co-sponsors from both parties openly defied the White House by introducing the "Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act." Despite furious White House pushback, similar bipartisan opposition has surfaced in the House.
I hope you will support this and other Forum efforts by donating at https://www.meforum.org/participation/
(The Forum can still provide a 2013 tax-deductible receipt for credit card donations received by noon EST on Dec. 31, 2013; or for checks dated Dec. 31, 2013.)
Yours sincerely,
Daniel Pipes
