Ever since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the media has consistently reassured us that only a tiny minority of Muslims actually support the use of violence against Israel and the West. It’s just a small fringe, 1% or 3% percent at best, they tell us, so don´t worry about it all too much. Needless to say that the Muslims are doing all they can to make sure we go on believing in this “small fringe.”

But a look at the numbers tells a very different story. The extent of support for global jihad against non-Muslims is frightening, and the numbers are anything but “a small fringe.”

Just look at the efforts of the supporters of the so-called “Palestinians” explaining to us that “the majority of Arabs/Muslims (including those of Gaza) do not support extremists and radicals.” But in December, 2007, Hamas celebrated its 20th anniversary. The main slogan of this celebration was “Jews, we have already dug up the graves for you.” And “peaceful” Muslims, who “in their majority do not support extremists and radicals,” greeted this slogan with such enthusiasm that it seems the only thing that stopped them from immediately running out and digging more graves for the Jews was the lack of spades (well, maybe Israeli Army had some role, too). According to the AP, almost 500,000 adult inhabitants of Gaza took part in this rally.

Do you know the total number of adult (males and females) inhabitants of Gaza?

It’s 500,000.

OK, Palestinian Arabs are radical because they are at war with Israel. But the Muslims living in such a tolerant country as Great Britain; who are THEY at war with?

Our politicians act by the principle: if the truth does not support our point of view – well, then we must bend the truth. At the summit of G-8, two days after the attack in London, the then Prime Minister of Great Britain Tony Blair gave three reasons for Islamic terrorism, which , according to him, were the following:

1. Lack of democracy;
2. Middle East conflict;
3. Poverty among the Muslims.

Of course Mr. Blair is a professional politician and in this quality he must say what he said. But his opinion is in sharp contradiction with what the people who know the situation from the inside say. Abdul Rahman al-Helbaui is the official spiritual leader of the British Muslims, and he says something very different. According to him, the very well-educated and very well-off Islamic youth, the third generation of immigrants from Islamic countries to the United Kingdom, are radicalizing at the alarming speed, moving to the actively anti-Western extremist positions.

Mr. Abdul Rahman al-Helbaui also exposes the inaccuracy of the thesis about poverty as the root of terrorism. “The extremism and radicalism of the young British Muslims do not depend on the education or financial situation, because the majority of the British Islamic radicals received good education and their financial situation is also good. The choice of radical Islam is more an emotional step than the rational choice”, he said.

And he is right! Read the biographies of those who committed the 9/11. Where do you see poverty and lack of education? Read the biographies of those who committed the attacks in London. They are of British middle-class families, with good and stable incomes.

And of course, nobody can say that there is any “lack of democracy” in Great Britain. More probable is that there is too much of it.

The results of the polls prove that Mr. Blair, in his espoused esteem of Muslims as being the loyal and peaceful citizens of Great Britain is, to put it mildly, a bit distant from reality. In a poll conducted five months ago and broadcast on Britain’s Channel 4 TV, nearly 25% of British Muslims said the July 7, 2005, terror bombings in London, which killed 52 innocent commuters, were justified. I mean, it’s those who had the courage to OPENLY ADMIT that they think they were justified. Another 30% said they would prefer to live under strict Islamic Sharia law rather than England’s democratic system.
Now, one in four justifying terror may not be a majority, but it certainly isn’t a “small fringe”, either.
However, the radicalism of the Muslims living in Europe and USA looks very pale compared to the sentiments of Muslims who live not in the West- but in Islamic countries. A survey published in December 2007, found that 44% of Nigerian Muslims believe suicide bombing attacks are “often” or “sometimes” acceptable. Only 28% said they were never justified. According to the annual Pew Global Attitudes Survey, less than half of Jordanian Muslims believe terror attacks are never justified. In Egypt, only 45% of Muslims say terror is never justified. As Reuters reported triumphantly on October 15, 2007; “less than 20 million of the adult Indonesian Muslims said they backed jihad and supported bomb attacks on the island of Bali aimed at foreign tourists”. It’s less than 10%, they say, it does not look like too much. But I, for example, do not feel too comfortable knowing that 20 million of the Indonesian Muslims are ready to kill me, even if “it’s less than 10%”. And besides, this is not the whole story. As we know, there is a lie, there is a very big lie – and there are statistics.

Reuters takes the responses given by male adult Muslims, correlates these responses with the TOTAL POPULATION OF INDONESIA, including new-born babies and gets its “insignificant” 10%. But if we look at the number of male adult Muslims in Indonesia, which is about 65 million, then the number of 20 million who said they backed Jihad and supported bomb attacks on the island of Bali aimed at foreign tourists will look somewhat different. It will mean that every third adult male in Indonesia supports Jihad and attacks on civilians, only because these civilians are not Muslims.
Without these statistical tricks, the numbers of those “peaceful Muslims” who support the terrorist attacks against non-Muslims would look not worrying, but alarming.

But the last nail in the coffin of the myth about “the small fringe” was hammered not by Washington Post or Jerusalem Post – but by the Arab Al-Jazeera. On the fifth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, a survey conducted by Al-Jazeera asked the respondents in various Islamic countries a question: “Do you support Osama Bin-Laden?”

A whopping 49.9% answered: YES.

So, 49.9% of Muslims support Bin-Laden and share both his goals – and his tactics to achieve these goals. In the elections of 1932, Hitler received the support of only 33% of Germans.
