ISIS Online Recruiter Neil Prakash Arrested in Turkey

(New York, NY) – The Counter Extremism Project (CEP) is releasing updated resources on Neil Prakash, an Australian online recruiter and facilitator for ISIS, following his reported arrest in Turkey. Prakash, also known as Abu Khaled al-Cambodi, was targeted and reportedly killed by a U.S. airstrike in Iraq in April 2016. However, months later, Australian Federal Police declared that the most senior Australian fighting with the terror group was “still alive” and warned that he was continuing to recruit online. Why Prakash tried to leave ISIS-controlled territory is unclear. CEP has long tracked Prakash on various online platforms as he has worked to recruit Muslims to ISIS-held territory and incite them to violence domestically. Although some companies have made intermittent effort to ban Prakash, he proved resilient in maintaining his online presence on Twitter and other platforms.
