IW Monthly Newsletter - June 2017

June 2017 Newsletter

Each month, Islamist Watch (a project of the Middle East Forum) will provide you with a newsletter featuring our top articles, blog posts and media appearances.

This month, we exposed the links between the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the San Diego school board, amid the furor over 'Islamophobia lessons' in schools. We discovered that a top official at Islamic Relief had circulated stories on social media that praised the killing of Jews. And we revealed that the Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF) has received funding from a Hamas-linked organization. (If you haven't seen our campaign about the SVCF, click here; and sign our petition here).

Our blog post on Tariq Ramadan's defense of the Virigina imam who advocates for Female Genital Mutilation has been shared on social media by the thousands. We also, for the first time, published in a prominent Pakistani media outlet, Dunya News, on the exploitation of interfaith dialogue by Islamist clerics.

For these stories and more, see below. And make sure to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.

How CAIR Shaped San Diego's Public Schools

In April 2017, the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) School Board approved a plan to address anti-Muslim bullying in schools. The driving force behind the plan, however, is the San Diego chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SD), which has a history of ties to radical Islamists.

Islamic Relief Official Praises Killing of Jews

Yousef Abdullah, the East Coast Operations Manager for Islamic Relief - America's largest Islamic charity - published a folk story about "martyrs" who provide guns to "kill more than 20 jews" and "fire rockets at Tel Aviv." At the top of Abdallah's post, the story is described as "very beautiful." Other posts refer to Jews as "stinking," and claim "the Jews put the outside wall of Al Aqsa [the mosque in Jerusalem] on fire."

Are Islamists Exploiting Interfaith Dialogue?

Interfaith dialogue seems like such a noble cause. In this age of religiously inspired terror, what could be better than bringing preachers of different faiths together in search of a common good? However, it seems that interfaith dialogue is increasingly being exploited by extremists, who have learned to praise other faiths in public, but curse them behind closed doors.

Terror-Linked IIIT Funds Silicon Valley Community Foundation

Since January, the Middle East Forum has worked – first in private and then in public – to persuade the Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF) to stop funding two such extremist organizations, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and Islamic Relief (IR), and instead support reformist Muslim groups.

British Elections and the Future of Counter-Terrorism

Jewish disillusionment with the Labour Party is accompanied by the collapse of support among Labour's traditional voters. Much of this rejection has to do with fears over security. Jeremy Corbyn has a long history of embracing terrorist organizations, supporting Islamism, and attacking counter-terrorism laws. A Corbyn-led government would likely see the empowerment of hard-line Islamists, a warm relationship with prominent Middle Eastern terrorist organizations, some dismantlement of the PREVENT program, and the marginalization of moderate Muslims.

Tariq Ramadan Defends Advocate of FGM

On June 12, influential Islamist thinker Tariq Ramadan released a 10-minute video on Facebook expressing support for Imam Shaker Elsayed of the Dar al-Hijrah Islamic Center in Virginia. Elsayed has been roundly condemned since a video emerged, courtesy of the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), in which he recommends female genital mutilation to avoid "hypersexuality."
