Hondurans Receiving Threatening Text Messages To “Stay Inside”

Posted: 16 Jul 2009 01:49 AM PDT

Hondurans are trying to get word out by Twitter that they are
receiving threatening text messages on their cell phones tonight, telling
them to stay inside and not leave their homes tomorrow night.

“Now more than ever I will be the first one out the door,”
Honduran Pedro Martinez told Canada Free Press tonight. Pedro Martinez is
the pseudonym we gave to the young Honduran professional that Canada Free
Press (CFP) walked through Twitter hookup last week.

“Tomorrow might be a bad day,” Pedro tipped off CFP on twitter.
“People are infiltrating Honduras thru (sic) Guatemala, El Salvador, and
Nicaragua with the intention to create chaos.”

Looks like deposed Honduran leader Manuel Zelaya, who has called for a popular insurrection in his own country so
that he can be returned to power after soldiers removed him at gunpoint on
June 28, is on the way back.

Cybug – Military Developing Half-Robot, Half-Insect Spies

Miniature robots could be good spies, but researchers now are
experimenting with insect cyborgs or “cybugs” that could work even better.
Scientists can already control the flight of real moths using implanted
devices.

The military and spy world no doubt would love tiny, live
camera-wielding versions of Predator drones that could fly undetected into
places where no human could ever go to snoop on the enemy.

Developing such robots has proven a challenge so far, with one
major hurdle being inventing an energy source for the droids that is both
low weight and high power.

Still, evidence that such machines are possible is ample in
nature in the form of insects, which convert biological energy into
flight.

Somali Man’s Family Says He’s Not A Terrorist

Posted: 15 Jul 2009 09:17 PM PDT

Prosecutors portray a 25-year-old Minneapolis man accused of
waging jihad in Somalia as a would-be terrorist who went so far as to help
build a training camp. But family members of Abdifatah Yusuf Isse say the
former college economics major never wanted to be a terrorist but got in
over his head after he accepted a plane ticket to Somalia so he could
visit his grandmother.

Isse and Salah Osman Ahmed, 26, are the first two men charged
in a long-running federal investigation into the recruitment of Minnesota
Somalis to join Islamist fighters in Somalia.

A grand jury indictment in February was unsealed this week
after Ahmed was arrested. The court file, briefly sealed and then unsealed
Wednesday without explanation, sheds some

Washington County Jail in Stillwater, Minn., shows Abdifatah Yusuf Isse.

light on the case. In the last 18 months, up to 20 Twin Cities
men of Somali descent are believed to have returned to their homeland, and
at least three have turned up dead in Somalia, according to their
families.

Isse pleaded guilty in April to federal charges that he
provided support to terrorists and has been cooperating with the FBI’s
investigation, according to the court documents.

His attorney, Paul Engh, said in a June filing that Isse and
other young Somalis were recruited at a house of worship to fight in
Somalia. Prosecutors say Isse admitted that he trained with terrorists in
Somalia and helped build a terrorist training camp.

Swiss Pay Millions To al Qaeda For Release Of Hostage

A sum between 3 and 5 million euros has been handed over to Al
Qaida for the Islamic Maghreb for the release of the Swiss hostage, Werner
Greiner, reported the Algerian press today. According to Liberté, quoting
informant sources, a Malian intermediary was to have delivered the 5
million euros to the terrorist group. According to the Arab language
newspaper El Khabar, the sum was set at 3 million, and arrived in northern
Niger with a Tuareg intermediary.

Yesterday and official from the Swiss Federal Department of
Foreign Affairs, Markus Boerlin, stated that “Switzerland did not
negotiate with the kidnappers or pay the ransom”. The Swiss citizen was
kidnapped in northern Mali in January with a British hostage, Edwyn Dyer,
who was killed at the beginning of June, reportedly due to London’s
refusal to negotiate and pay the ransom to the terrorists.

A Manhattan teenager inspired by the reel life anti-social
character played by Brad Pitt in “Fight Club” is now in real trouble –
he’s charged with bombing an Upper East Side Starbucks as part of an
attack on corporate America, New York City police said Wednesday.

Kyle Shaw, 17, was arrested outside his Chelsea building
Tuesday night and charged with arson, criminal mischief and criminal
possession of weapon.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Shaw is not connected to the
still-unsolved bombings at the Mexican and British consulates or to a
bombing at the Times Square military recruitment station.

Community Preparedness Toolkit Launches On Serve.gov

Posted: 15 Jul 2009 08:55 PM PDT

community_preparedness_toolkit

Research on preparedness shows that people who believe
themselves “prepared” for disasters often aren’t as prepared as they
think. Forty percent of survey respondents did not have household plans,
80 percent had not conducted home evacuation drills, and nearly 60 percent
did not know their community’s evacuation routes.

Nearly 20 percent of survey respondents reported having a
disability that would affect their capacity to respond to an emergency
situation, but shockingly only one out of four of them had made
arrangements specific to their disability to help them respond safely in
the event of an emergency.

Our nation’s emergency managers, firefighters, law enforcement
officers, EMT/paramedics, and other emergency responders do an incredible
job of keeping us safe, but they can’t do it alone. We must all embrace
our individual responsibility to be prepared – in doing so, we contribute
to the safety and security of the nation as well.

Becoming more prepared in case of an emergency is easier than
you might think. Whether it’s your home, your neighborhood, your place of
business, or your school, you can take a few simple steps to prepare your
community. This toolkit gives you the basics for getting started.

Gunfire Erupts Near Capitol Hill After Traffic Stop

Posted: 15 Jul 2009 04:02 PM PDT

capitol hill
Police have apparently sealed off a
number of entrances to the U.S. Capitol after gunfire erupted a few blocks
away.

Police apparently shot a 35-year-old man near the U.S. Capitol
on Wednesday in what authorities described as a routine traffic stop that
turned deadly.

The unidentified man was shot after brandishing a weapon,
police said. He died shortly after the late afternoon confrontation, in
which witnesses said multiple gunshots were fired.
