!! Victory in the U.S. Senate !! Grassroots “People Power” on Display by Guy Rodgers, ACT! for America Executive Director Dear Solsticewitch13 Last Thursday we sent out an Action Alert calling upon you our members to contact their Senators, with a special focus on Senators Schumer, Bayh, Conrad, Lautenberg and Murray. At stake was passage of amendment 932, an amendment to the budget that would prohibit federal funds from the Department of Energy budget (read: our tax dollars) in fiscal year 2010 from being spent on vendors and suppliers that do business with Iran’s energy sector. Within one hour after the email went out, we began receiving phone calls and emails telling us they couldn’t even get through to their Senators. A chapter leader told us she had been calling Senator Schumer’s office for over an hour, only to get a busy signal every time she called. Another email told us another Senator’s voice mailbox was full. In other words, you responded! The U.S. Senate heard your voice – and the amendment passed. And should this provision be adopted in final passage of the budget, the economic vise around Iran will be squeezed a little tighter as a result. This illustrates, yet again, why the ACT! for America mission and strategy is essential to rolling back the tide of Islamofascism. Many of you have heard Brigitte, Kelly or I say, “Education is necessary – but it’s not sufficient.” Because it’s going to take informed, equipped, organized and mobilized action to win the kind of victories we must win in such arenas as government and academia. This is why we launched our chapter network 18 months ago. This is why we strive every day to find and recruit new members to our organization. This is why we have put a full-time Director of Government Relations in place on Capitol Hill. This is why we look strategically for battles we can fight – and win. This is why we ask you to invest financially in ACT! for America. Because everything we do, let me repeat, everything we do, is carefully weaved together to enable us to fulfill our mission, which is to ensure victory over the threat of radical Islam, in whatever form that threat presents itself, and thus to protect your safety, security, and liberty. The history of successful American grassroots movements demonstrates clearly that as we grow larger and stronger, more victories will come, and they will be bigger victories. It has been said that “freedom isn’t free.” Some, like our troops, are on the front lines, literally risking their lives to protect us and ensure we can live in freedom. Most of us don’t have to risk our lives to this end, but each of us can do something. As you can see, we are making progress. We can each play a part in this grand cause.
