Brad Thor - the Apostle

Brad Thor - the Apostle

In his latest book The Apostle, Brad Thor seamlessly weaves
recent headlines, current events and fiction into a storyline that
powerfully and convincingly draws you into the midst of an incredible
International political thriller. The Apostle is an action-packed story
with more than a few parallels to the current political climate.

When it comes to blending fact with fiction, Brad Thor is among
the best. His exceptional ability adds a dimension of depth to his books
that few writers in this genre are able to achieve. It provides the reader
with a breathtaking, edge-of-your-seat experience that is unmatched in
most political thrillers.

Maybe it’s because Thor isn’t content conducting research from
the comfort of an office or study. He lives what he writes. In fact, the
research for this particular novel took him on a secret Black Ops mission
with U.S. Special Forces in Afghanistan. A mission that brought him face
to face with Taliban forces. The result… A top-notch book from cover to
cover that you can’t put down.

Brad Thor’s personal character, courage and dedication to his
readers is a rarity that is evident throughout the book.

If you’re a Brad Thor fan, it goes without saying that this is
a “must read”. If you’re new to Brad Thor or this genre, there’s no better
book or writer to start with.

Synopsis

Every politician has a secret. And when the daughter of a
politically-connected family is kidnapped abroad, America’s new president
will agree to
anything even a deadly and ill-advised rescue plan in
order to keep his secret hidden.

A new administration and a new approach to dealing with
America’s enemies have left covert counterterrorism operative Scot Harvath
without a job. But when American doctor Julia Gallo is kidnapped in
Afghanistan, the terms of her ransom leave the president with only one
course of action. In a dangerous assignment that the United States
government will deny any knowledge of, Scot Harvath must secretly
infiltrate Kabul’s notorious Policharki Prison and free the man the
kidnappers demand as ransom al-Qaeda mastermind, Mustafa Khan.

But when Harvath arrives, he quickly learns that there is more
to the kidnapping than anyone dares to admit. And as the subterfuge is
laid bare, Harvath must examine his own career of hunting down and killing
terrorists, and ask himself if he has what it takes to help one of the
world’s worst go free.

Brimming with the kind of ripped-from-the-headlines
authenticity Brad Thor’s internationally bestselling novels are known for,
The Apostle doubles down on the blockbuster success of The Last Patriot
and reaffirms Thor’s status as the master of the political thriller.

Terror Suspect Could Be Forced to Manhattan Hearing

Siddiqui

A U.S.-trained Pakistani scientist accused of helping al-Qaida
and shooting at FBI agents may be forced to appear in court Monday against
her will.

Aafia Siddiqui may have to appear by video or in person in
federal court in Manhattan at a hearing to decide if she’s competent to
stand trial, defense attorney Dawn Cardi said. Siddiqui has reported
seeing her children in her jail cell and has stated she died after being
strip-searched.

Prosecutors accuse Siddiqui of having ties to al-Qaida and say
she grabbed a U.S. Army officer’s M-4 rifle in Afghanistan, pointed it at
an Army captain and cried “Allahu akbar,” Arabic for “God is great.” They
say she fired at U.S. soldiers and FBI agents before she was shot and
wounded by an Army officer.

[...]

Siddiqui, a specialist in neuroscience who trained at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Brandeis University, appeared in
court twice after she was brought to the U.S. last August but has refused
to attend proceedings since then. She’s charged with attempted murder and
assault.

U.S. District Judge Richard Berman entered a not guilty plea
for her.

The judge signed an order days ago permitting authorities to
take her to court against her will, Cardi said.

Biden Says US Will Not Stand In Way of Israel Attack On Iran

Vice President Joe Biden signaled that the Obama administration
would not stand in the way if Israel chose to attack Iran’s nuclear
facilities, even as the top U.S. military officer said any attack on Iran
would be destabilizing.

[...]

In an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” Biden also said the U.S.
offer to negotiate with Tehran on its nuclear program still stands. Some
thought the administration’s approach might change in light of the Iranian
government’s harsh crackdown on protesters after the June 12 presidential
election. Opponents of the ruling authorities claimed the vote was rigged
against them.

“If the Iranians respond to the offer of engagement, we will
engage,” Biden said.

It was after meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
at the White House on May 18 that President Barack Obama said it should be
clear by year’s end whether Iran was open to direct negotiations. Obama
told The Associated Press last Thursday that persuading Iran to forego
nuclear weapons has been made more difficult by the crackdown after the
disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Homeland Security Gives NYPD Radiation Detectors

Posted: 06 Jul 2009 12:20 AM PDT

NYPD Radiation Monitor

NYPD Radiation Monitor

The US Department of Homeland Security has given three
state-of-the-art radiation detectors to the New York Police Department to
patrol city streets in search of dirty bombs and other nuclear
threats.

The 450,000-dollar worth Advanced Spectroscopic Portal Monitors
will be placed in three SUVs on Wednesday at entrances to tunnels, bridges
and tollbooths, the Daily News reports.

The detectors had been purchased by DHS’ National Nuclear
Detection Office for use at the nation’s ports, but officials concluded
they weren’t strong enough to penetrate ship containers, police sources
said.

Officials believe they will be able to detect radioactive
isotopes emanating from a dirty bomb in the back of a car.

“We think they’ll be useful getting hits on vehicles on the
road,” a NYPD official said.

Recently, the department had also purchased 8,000 Dosimeters,
pager-sized detectors to be given to police if there is a nuclear
attack.

Outfitted in protective gear, officers would use the Dosimeters
to find “hot spots” of radiation.

Additionally, sources said the NYPD will station a
sophisticated radiation-detecting device at this weekend’s July 4
celebration at the retired battleship Intrepid.

The Thermo is used up to a dozen times a year and is stationed
at the main entrance to a sensitive target.

Pipe-Bomb Thrown Inside Buffalo Church

Buffalo Church Pipe Bomb

A Buffalo church is on alert after a device, believed to be a
pipe-bomb, was thrown inside it over-night. No one was hurt, but the
pastor of Redeemer Fire Fellowship Church on Lewis Street, says it could
have been deadly.

Pastor David Keaton says he got a call from someone last night
that his church was on fire,. “So, when I arrived here, it wasn’t
necessarily on fire. Someone had broken the side door and thrown a
pipe-bomb in,” said Keaton.

Keaton says flame-resistant carpet prevented the fuse from
igniting the bomb and catching the church on fire.

Buffalo Police investigators told Keaton if the device would
have ignited inside, the damage could have been substantial, “It would
have certainly blown all of this glass out, it would have damaged all of
this front area…certainly there would have been fire.”

The Catholic Diocese sold the building to Keaton, a Baptist
minister, about a month ago. He doesn’t know anyone who would want to hurt
him or the church, “Don’t want to say a hate crime, don’t want to say
terrorist, don’t want to make it a race issue, or religious issue.”

China Riots

Violence in the capital of China’s Xinjiang region leaves 140
people dead and scores injured after rioting by members of a Muslim ethnic
group and a police crackdown.

Chinese state media says that 140 people have been killed and
more than 800 hurt in violence in the country’s western Xinjiang
region.

The official Xinhua News Agency did not immediately give any
other details Monday on the number of deaths, but said the death toll “was
still climbing.” It earlier reported that four people had been killed in
violence after protesters from a Muslim ethnic group rioted Sunday in the
region’s capital Urumqi, overturning barricades, attacking bystanders and
clashing with police.

The protesters were demanding an investigation into a fight
between Uighurs and Han Chinese workers at a southern China factory last
month that state media said left two people dead.

Philippines Church Bomb Blast Kills Five

Islamist militants have been blamed for a bomb blast in the
Philippines today which killed at least five people and wounded dozens
more.

The bomb exploded outside the Immaculate Conception cathedral
in Cotabato city, 545 miles (880 kilometers) south of Manila, as
church-goers celebrated Mass.

A woman selling roast pork was killed on the spot while four
others, including a soldier and three-year-old boy, died in a nearby
hospital. Among the wounded were five soldiers who were passing the
cathedral in an army van when the device, fashioned from a mortar round,
exploded said army spokesman Colonel Jonathan Ponce.

“This is the handiwork of the rogue members of the Moro Islamic
Liberation Front (MILF),” Colonel Ponce told reporters, referring to the
Muslim organisation which has waged a decades long battle for self rule in
the southern island of Mindanao.

Domestic Terrorism, 6th Bomb Damages B.C. Pipeline

Posted: 05 Jul 2009 08:01 AM PDT

EnCana Corp.’s natural gas pipeline in northeastern B.C. sprang
a small leak after being targeted by a sixth bomb Saturday, the second
case of what the RCMP describe as “domestic terrorism” in less than a
week.

The bomb went off between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. Saturday near Pouce
Coupe, eight kilometres south of Dawson Creek, not far from the site of a
July 1 bombing.

Police were alerted when a resident reported hearing a loud
bang early Saturday morning.

The RCMP said the explosion caused a small leak of sour gas
that was quickly stopped when an automatic safety system shut down that
section of pipeline.

There were no injuries, but police said the latest blast has
them concerned for public safety because crews were working nearby to fix
a wellhead damaged in the previous attack.

RCMP Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said police believe all six bombings are
related.

Man Had Homemade Bomb, Threatened School

Posted: 05 Jul 2009 07:56 AM PDT

A man was found to be carrying a homemade bomb early Saturday
morning after allegedly making threats to blow up a school, police
said.

Jason Babson, 29, was found carrying a homemade explosive
device by Hudson Falls police at 1:34 a.m. Saturday after making a run
from authorities, police said.

Police were called after Babson had a dispute with two other
residents, where he allegedly said the CIA, police and fire departments
were all corrupt and that he would blow up a school on the 4th of July. He
fled the scene before police arrived but was later found, questioned, and
found to be acting strange, police said. He was in possession of the bomb
and some fireworks.

Babson later said in a statement he had built the device to use
for the holiday but changed his mind and was going to throw it into the
Feeder Canal, close to where police found him.

Sargeant Scott Moulthrop said Babson was a lifelong Hudson
Falls resident, but also lived in Pennsylvania. As a geologist, he worked
with a contracting firm on projects in the Middle East and was set to go
overseas again soon, Moulthrop said.

He was charged with third degree criminal possession of a
weapon and illegal possesion of fireworks. He was arraigned and sent to
Washington County Correctional Facility with no bail, his next court
appearance is Tuesday.
