FBI: Russian Programmer At Goldman Sachs Stole Stock-Trading Secret
Code

A computer programmer working for Goldman Sachs was arrested
last week on charges that he stole proprietary source code for software
his employer uses to make sophisticated, high-speed, high-volume stock and
commodities trades.

Sergey Aleynikov, who earned nearly $400,000 a year in his job,
allegedly stole 32 megabytes of data over four days in June and
transferred it to a website hosted in Germany before trying to erase his
tracks from Goldman Sach’s network. He neglected to take into account,
however, that the company kept a backup record of its command logs. On at
least two occasions, he transferred the data remotely while logged into
his company’s network from his home computer.

Aleynikov, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Russia, was arrested
on July 3 at the Newark Airport in New Jersey as he exited a flight and is
being held on charges related to theft of trade secrets until he posts
$750,000 in bond, pays $75,000 in cash and surrenders his travel
documents.

Cybercriminals Steal $415,000 From Bullitt County Kentucky

Posted: 06 Jul 2009 02:16 PM PDT

Sophisticated international cybercriminals stole $415,000 from
a bank account belonging to Bullitt County, Ky. last month — and got two
dozen regular citizens to help them.

[...]

A gang based in the former Soviet Union used viruses to
secretly take control of computers used by county officials, including the
country treasurer and a local judge, according to the Washington Post.

Then they secretly re-routed e-mails containing one-time
passwords that both the treasurer and the judge would have to use to
authorize wire transfers from the account, which belonged to Bullitt
County Fiscal Court in Shepherdsville and was used to make payroll.

Beginning on June 22, the hackers began sending transfers, each
under $10,000 so as not to alert federal watchdogs, to the bank accounts
of 25 different Americans who’d been unwittingly recruited as “mules” by
the Eastern European criminals.

The mules, who’d responded to ads for temporary at-home editing
work on the job-placement Web site CareerBuilder.com, were instructed to
keep 5 percent of the transfers as “commissions” and wire the rest of the
money to accounts in Ukraine and Russia.

One mule found herself out thousands of dollars once Bullitt
County got wise to what was happening and its bank started recalling the
transfers.

Tunisia – Soldiers Arrested In Terror Plot Against US Military
Officers

Posted: 06 Jul 2009 10:30 AM PDT

tunisia

Tunisian authorities have reportedly arrested nine soldiers for
allegedly planning attacks on visiting American military officers.

The arrests were made under the Tunisian anti-terrorism law,
lawyers said.

The detainees, two of whom are officers in the Tunisian Air
Force, planned to assassinate American military officers who visit the
country periodically for military training and joint exercises with the
Tunisian army, the German Deutsche Press Agency (DPA) reported.

Dr. Jack Kalpakian, a political expert at Morocco’s Al-Akhawayn
University in Ifrane, said he was not surprised to hear news of the terror
sweep.

“Tunisia’s government has followed a very secularist policy and
has not been very sympathetic towards any kind of political religious
expression,” he told The Media Line.

“While in other countries in North Africa expressions of
Islamism are tolerated to some extent, Tunisia represses these voices,” he
said.

Lawyer Samir Bin ‘Amar told DPA that a court charged the nine
detainees with incitement to carry out terror attacks, attempting to
acquire weapons and explosives for a terror organization and using
Tunisian soil to recruit people for a terror organization.

Al-Qaeda Cell Was Preparing To Attack Middle East Gas Pipelines

Posted: 06 Jul 2009 10:20 AM PDT

An international Al-Qaeda cell, based in the northern Sinai
Penninsula, is suspected of being involved in plans to attack gas
pipelines running between Israel and Egypt.

According to Egyptian media, the plan was to strike Israeli
ships passing through the Suez Canal.

Ten people, allegedly behind a February bomb attack at Cairo’s
famous Khan el-Khalili market, have been under suspicion since a police
raid uncovered arms and information from a hideout used by the group.

The cache of explosives included anti-tank weapons, car bombs
and personal explosive belts.

Two Palestinians, five Egyptians, a Belgian, a Briton and a
French citizen are among the suspected cell members.

It is believed the European members probably entered Egypt
through underground tunnels near Rafah into the Gaza Strip.

They allegedly received money for their mission and moved back
to Egypt through the tunnels, at which time they allegedly carried out the
Cairo attack.

It has been suggested the cell was controlled by Khaled
Mohammed Ahmed, the Palestinian-based commander of an al-Qaeda group.

UK – Bomb Seizures Spark Far-right Terror Plot Fear

Posted: 06 Jul 2009 10:06 AM PDT

A network of suspected far-right extremists with access to 300
weapons and 80 bombs has been uncovered by counter-terrorism
detectives.

Thirty-two people have been questioned in a police operation
that raises the prospect of a right-wing bombing campaign against mosques.
Police are said to have recovered a British National party membership card
and other right-wing literature during a raid on the home of one suspect
charged under the Terrorism Act.

In England’s largest seizure of a suspected terrorist arsenal
since the IRA mainland bombings of the early 1990s, rocket launchers,
grenades, pipe bombs and dozens of firearms have been recovered in the
past six weeks during raids on more than 20 properties. Several people
have been charged and more arrests are imminent. Current police activity
is linked to arrests in Europe, New Zealand and Australia.

Police are examining allegations that many of the guns were
manufactured or reactivated, then sold over the internet to viewers of a
right-wing website. Details of the previously secret operation were
disclosed by Sir Norman Bettison, the chief constable of West Yorkshire,
to security officials.
