The London-based Arab newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat reported today that Islamic State in Libya is training terrorists in the port city of Sirte to fly warplanes.

The Jihadist organization is using at least one new flight simulator, Asharq al-Awsat claimed.

The paper quoted military officials in Libya who said they could not determine how the flight simulator ended up in the hands of Islamic State. They also claimed that ISIS has at least one fighter jet that is used in the training of new pilots.

“It’s a modern simulator, which apparently arrived from abroad,” the officials told Asharq Al-Awsat, adding that “the simulator is replete with a steering wheel to practice take-off and landing, a radar screen, and communications devices to contact the control tower.”

A Senior Libyan officer who spoke to Asharq Al-Awsat from Cairo in Egypt confirmed that Islamic State obtained the flight simulator in October. The officer also reported that the Libyan air force had tried to destroy the training facility several times but did not succeed. Islamic State is known to have seized several fighter jets in Syria and Iraq, but has always lacked the pilots to fly them. In some cases, ISIS destroyed warplanes they captured from the Syrian and Iraqi army.
